MOBI, a non-profit consortium focused on Web3 solutions, has achieved a significant milestone in developing a global battery passport using Web3 technology.

This “battery passport” aims to track batteries throughout their lifecycle,improving efficiency, sustainability, and compliance across the battery industry.

The first stage of a three-year project successfully demonstrated data validation and exchange between nine organizations.

This paves the way for a future where battery information can be securely shared across the entire battery value chain.

MOBI highlights the growing need for a global battery tracking system due to:

• Increased use of batteries for sustainable energy solutions
• Complex global battery value chains
• Emerging regulations requiring digital battery tracking

The solution leverages Web3 technologies, specifically Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), to create a secure and decentralized system for managing battery data.

This allows different players in the battery industry to control and share data without relying on a central authority.

This initial stage focused on one-to-one data verification. The next stage will explore creating a marketplace where battery data can be securely shared across the industry. Potential applications include:

• Enhanced battery and carbon credit management
• Vehicle-to-grid communication and transactions
• Risk-based insurance calculations
• Data-driven pricing for used electric vehicles

MOBI is calling for collaboration from public and private organizations to further develop this technology.

Industry leaders from Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Anritsu, and TradeLog all expressed their support for the project and its potential to revolutionize the battery industry.
