    XGA Stories from the Community: Malaysia to Host Inaugural Blockchain Week in July 2024

    Inaugural Malaysia Blockchain Week to kick off in Kuala Lumpur in July 2024

    Malaysia is launching its first-ever Malaysia Blockchain Week (MYBW) in July 2024.

    This event will explore the future of Web3 technology in the country, featuring talks by industry leaders, panel discussions on key blockchain topics, and a hackathon.

    The goal is to establish Malaysia as a hub for blockchain innovation in Southeast Asia.

    Our journalist spoke with Dr. Ian Tan, COO and Founder of Lydian Labs, who is also a major organizer of the event, for this week’s XGA Stories from the Community.

    GATHERING ASIA’S BLOCKCHAIN COMMUNITY

    Malaysia Blockchain Week will be the first of its kind in the country, attracting people from all over Asia to learn about the Malaysia blockchain industry.

    With the event set to take place at the World Trade Centre KL, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in less than a month, extensive preparations are underway.

    Dr. Ian Tan shares that the team has been deeply touched by the support from the Web3 community.

    “The journey has been great. We are very touched by the support pouring in to see Malaysia Blockchain Week succeed.”

    “The number of founders joining the panel, who are rarely seen at speaking engagements, is a testament to the support we’ve gained,” Dr. Ian Tan shares.

    The event has also partnered with various international organizations. “We are one of the very few, if not the only event, with partners like  IVS, Japan Blockchain Week, Taipei Blockchain Week, and Coinfest Asia 2024.

    “These events don’t see us as competitors but chose to support us, which is very encouraging. Malaysia has good prospects in the blockchain industry,” says Dr. Ian Tan.

    A PLATFORM FOR COLLABORATION

    “Our vision is to build a platform where multiple stakeholders in the ecosystemcome together and collaborate.”

    “Whether it’s the blockchain industry or traditional businesses, we target government entities, businesses, talents, and consumers. The whole event is conceptualized around this,” Dr. Ian Tan explains.

    Besides being a significant event for networking and connecting over blockchain, the team aims to inspire.

    “One of our key mandates is to raise awareness about the blockchain industry. Many people don’t understand what it’s all about and what it can offer.”

    The event will spotlight Malaysian achievements in blockchain.

    “Many people don’t know that CoinGecko, Etherscan, and Jupiter Exchange are founded in Malaysia. We need to raise awareness about these,” he adds.

    The purpose of Malaysia Blockchain Week is to give exposure to Web3 founders, projects, and talents in Malaysia, while encouraging traditional businesses to explore blockchain technology’s potential use cases.

    “It’s a relatively new industry, and we need to do whatever we can to promote mass adoption. We need more people on board,” Dr. Ian Tan says.

    INTERNATIONAL AND LOCAL PARTICIPATION

    Despite being hosted in Malaysia, the event will not solely focus on Malaysian projects.

    “We are bringing in international companies like Bitget Wallet and CoinEx Wallet.”

    “We have a good balance between local and international projects. We want everyone to play a part in building the Malaysian ecosystem.”

    Malaysia Blockchain Week will work with MDEC as strategic partners to address current challenges in Malaysia’s blockchain landscape and attract multinational corporations.

    The event will feature both local and international speakers.

    “It’s ironic because many Malaysians work for big companies in the blockchain space. When they see it’s Malaysia Blockchain Week, they send their Malaysian counterparts. Our local Malaysians working in international companies will speak on behalf of these companies,” Dr. Ian says.

    Regarding the future of Malaysia Blockchain Week, Dr. Ian Tan hopes it will become an annual event.

    “If the stars align, then yes. I would love the honor of organizing it continuously. Building a legacy requires continuity, and I would love to see this event continue next year and beyond,” he concludes.

    The Malaysia Blockchain Week 2024 is happening at the World Trade Centre KL  on 31 July – 1 August 2024.
