Galaxy Digital Tokenizes 18th-Century Stradivarius Violin for Multimillion-Dollar Loan
Galaxy Digital, a prominent crypto-focused firm, has made headlines by tokenizing an 18th-century violin, as reported by Bloomberg.
The move involves creating a blockchain-based version of the iconic instrument to serve as collateral for a multimillion-dollar loan.
According to a press release, the violin in question is a 1708 Stradivarius once owned by Russia’s empress Catherine the Great.
Purchased at auction last year by Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu, the violin is valued at over $9 million. Galaxy Digital provided Siu with a loan, with the prized instrument serving as collateral.
In addition to using the physical violin as collateral, Galaxy Digital also created a nonfungible token (NFT) representing the instrument, further bolstering its collateralization.

Galaxy CEO Michael Novogratz highlighted the transformative potential of such endeavors, stating, “By starting with high-end assets like this violin, we’re creating a process that will transform how a whole range of assets are managed, valued, and traded in a digital economy.”
Tokenization, the practice of converting real-world assets into digital tokens for trading on blockchain platforms, is gaining traction.
Estimates suggest that the total value of on-chain real-world assets surpassed $118 billion by late 2023.
Tokenization offers advantages such as enhanced liquidity and the ability to fractionalize assets, making them more accessible for trading.
While tokenizing the violin was not strictly necessary, Siu indicated to Bloomberg that it adds liquidity to the asset.
He expressed openness to eventually fractionalizing the tokenized instrument, enabling investors to purchase fractions of ownership. However, there are currently no plans to do so.
